Greywater | Greywater Systems.Greywater | Greywater Systems.

Greywater is defined as water from baths, showers, hand basins and clothes washing machines (laundry). Under no circumstances may water be taken from toilets, bidets or any dish washing sources at all.

Greywater is very useful for two purposes,re-used for toilet flushing or for garden irrigation purposes. One bacterium in the correct medium of food and temperature can form one ton of bacteria within 24 hours. It is therefore of at most importance that greywater should not be stored for longer than 24 hours.

Greywater from the shower or bath is generally good quality water for the garden. If greywater is re-used within 24 hours,it poses no risk.

The soap levels in greywater are actually good for the garden as they are a wetting agent. Perhaps the most important aspect to the re-use of grey water for irrigation purposes is what to use for washing powders. The use of any phosphate rich washing powder will poison your soil over the long term. There are phosphate free washing powders available in all major retail store like Pick &Pay and Woolworths. These must be used. – (Eco Soft)

Greywater contains bacteria and the particles of water must land on the soil and not float down wind to be breathed in. Spraying means that the likelihood of polluting groundwater is eliminated.

A lack of experience and knowledge with modern greywater systems has led to some concern over potential health and environmental risks. If properly designed,a greywater system will lower sewage costs and at the same time reduce water usage for irrigation.

By re-using greywater, you can expect to lower your water bill &water demand by at least 33%. Whilst re-using greywater, less water enters the city sewage systems saving the government from building new treatment plants.
